There certainly are waves in the
equestrian industry these days. More popular than ever. Not
likely a tsunami, but big enough to bolster alternative modalities
for the horse. The waves I am mentioning are forms of consistent
treatment used on the elite, high performance horses to pleasure
horses. Magna wave and shock wave are taking the industry into a new
direction of treatment, being applied by horse owners, hired
operators, and veterinarians. Magna wave and shock wave are used for
many different reasons. The “waves “are used for blocking pain, to
treating suspensory attachments, to boney cysts, and for the general
application on muscles.
The critical thinker is certain to understand
the root cause of the symptoms rather than simply using Magna and
Shock wave as proper interventions to alleviate symptoms. I often
say “you cannot be everything for everyone”. This adage needs to be
applied to the use of the “waves”. Everything has its place in
managing the prevention and correction of physical problems in
horses. The “waves” have some positive effects but they are just a
small spoke to the wheel when it comes to treating diagnosed
problems in horses.
Be certain to receive a proper diagnosis, and
identify the root cause of the problem when deciding to use the
“waves”, so that symptoms are not just being addressed. When
symptoms are only addressed the “waves” across America may be
denying the horse the proper treatment.
